About Lover’s Beach

Lover’s Beach is a natural protected area, and all contestants and spectators must respect the beach. Please obey the following rules:

  • Do NOT Climb the Rocks: Please do not climb the rocks around Lover's.

  • Hazardous Conditions: Please do not enter the water on the pacific side if you are not a strong swimmer. The ocean conditions may be very hazardous and you should exercise caution before getting into the water.

  • Do Not Litter: Please respect the area and do not leave trash behind. Leave the beach better than you found it.

  • No Fishing: Fishing is not allowed at Lover’s beach because of it’s designation as a natural protected area. Please do not fish at Lover’s.

  • Reef-safe/biodegradable sunscreen: Please only use reef-safe, biodegradable sunscreen here to help protect the natural environment.

  • No Fireworks: Please do not use any fireworks at Lover’s Beach.

  • Animals: Stay at least 10 feet away from any wildlife, including seals, birds, or ocean wildlife. Do not disturb their behavior in any way.

  • Plants: Please do not disturb any plants on or around the beach.

In short, please be respectful to Lover’s Beach, and discourage anyone you see violating these rules. We are very fortunate to have a permit to run this event. Respecting these rules will help make sure we can continue to get permits in the future.

How to Get to Cabo

  • Flight: Cabo International Airport (SJD) in San Jose del Cabo is the closest major airport. We recommend arriving there. We recommend everyone should arrive no later than Thursday, April 25th.

  • Shuttle or Taxi: You can drive from SJD into Cabo. This drive is about 1 hour. Taxis and shuttles can be arranged online or at the airport.

Where to Stay

  • Solmar Beach: One of the most convenient places to stay is at a hotel or short-term rental on Solmar Beach. The waves on Solmar are comparable to Lover’s Beach, making it a great option for skimboarders looking to score waves outside of the contest. However, beware that the cost for these rooms is higher than many other options in downtown Cabo.

  • Downtown Cabo: Downtown Cabo San Lucas, within about 3-4 blocks of the harbor, has a variety of hotels and short-term rentals that are typically more affordable than rooms on the Pacific side (Solmar). Usually these are within walking distance to the harbor where you can catch a water taxi down to Lover’s Beach. Beware that many rooms in downtown may be near nightclubs and can often be very loud. Be sure to check reviews so you don’t stay in a room too close to the nighttime noise.

What to Bring

  • Umbrella or Shade: Lover’s Beach gets very hot during the day, and there is very little natural shade. We highly recommend bringing an umbrella to hide from the sun.

  • Sun protection and sunglasses: For many reasons stated above, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and any other form of sun protection are highly advised, as Lover’s is a remote beach with very little shade. Please only bring reef-safe, biodegradable sunscreen.

  • Lunch and drinks: Lover’s is a remote beach only accessible via water taxi or hiking. You should plan to bring food and drink to last you into the afternoon.

  • Cash: While it’s no guarantee, there may be food vendors Lover’s. If anyone helps you, they expect to be tipped. Bring cash accordingly.

Where to Skim

  • Lover’s Beach: Lover’s is the contest site. This is the very tip of the peninsula in Cabo San Lucas and is home to heavy shorebreak and often siders on the far east corner.

  • Solmar Beach: Solmar is next to Lover’s, and it’s a good place to skim outside of competition. The shorebreak here is very heavy and there is often a sider at the far east corner of the beach. You can get onto Solmar through the hotels. The Grand Solmar will let anyone in, but they may require you to leave your ID with the security guard while you visit the beach. This is normal and they will give you back your ID once you leave.

  • Cortez Side of Cabo: There are a variety of beaches from Cabo San Lucas to past San Jose del Cabo that have great shorebreak. If you drive along the coast you can often find waves with a little exploration. These spots are often good when the swell is too big for Lover’s and Solmar.

  • Pacific Side of Cabo: There are a lot of skim spots from Cabo to Todos Santos. These spots are much more susceptible to wind and can get blown out early in the day. These spots are often good when the swell is too small for Lover’s and Solmar.

Priority and Interference

Priority and inteference rules will be enforced according to the UST rulebook, following the guidelines outlined in the video here. All contestants are encouraged to review this video prior to competing.
